Bell Rock Breakfast

We both woke up early but we relaxed until the alarm went off at 7AM. Then we packed and got ready. We had our planned early breakfast between 7:30AM and 7:50AM before checking out. We paid for the evening meal from Wednesday evening which was all we owed. Then we waited outside from 7:55AM for our 8AM pickup. It was a grey start but looking fine for flight with a light wind and no fog.

Flight to Exeter

It was a nice sunrise as we left on the shuttle at 8AM. 10 minutes later we were at the checkin queue. We were through by 8:20AM. The boarding cards were big, like coasters. We waited in the café with a good view of the planes. I got itchy feet after a while and wandered for a bit.

Fog in Exeter meant a short delay. But it was forecast to clear soon though. So we were called to the gate at 9AM to see the safety video. We boarded 10 minutes later and took off soon after. It was a lovely flight! We were above the clouds then over Cornwall. We saw some great views of Cornwall, including the Eden Project, Newquay airport and lovely coastal views. Again Renée and I got the front seats closest to the cockpit. I could see the altimeter peak at around 10,000 feet. Soon we were past Plymouth and going over a rugged Dartmoor. From up here we could see France to the South in the far distance. Patches of fog were indeed present between Dartmoor and Exeter but the airport was indeed clear and we landed at 10:05AM. The luggage was already there and we left the airport just 10 minutes after landing.

Exeter to London

A bus was arriving as we left the airport terminal. We got on and waited for 10:35AM departure. It was nice in the sunshine and we also got chatting to a passenger as we passed the Met Office and wound our way into Exeter town centre. We arrived at Exeter St. David's station at 11:06AM. We bought Cornish Pasties from a nearby shop and ate the pasties on a bench in the sunshine by the taxi rank.

At 11:30AM we looked inside the station. We had tea and coffee before going to the platforms. The train was looking to be nearly on time. We waited on the platform in sunshine and soon the train arrived and we boarded, stowed our luggage and found our booked seats. We were on our way at 12:22PM. We ate our gingerbread men from Scilly Cakes which were delicious. It was a smooth journey home thank goodness unlike the outbound trip. The countryside was nice in the sunshine.

Nice clouds and scenery. Crossing the River Cary just past Somerton, Somerset. More cloudscapes. Passing Ealing Broadway station. Some old gasworks in Kensal Green just past Wormwood Scrubs.

The train was still a bit late getting back to Paddington but by GwR standards this was pretty good. We got back to Paddington at 3:10PM and were back home at 3:55PM in time for tea. Despite the stormy start it had been a lovely holiday. Renée and I both really liked the Isles of Scillyand would both consider returning there in the future. It would be cool to visit the islands that we didn't see this time as well as explore more parts of the islands that we did see. It would be really cool to visit on one of the spring low tides when it becomes possible to walk between certain islands across an exposed sand bar.
