I found a Female Black Tailed Skimmer in Oaken Wood, Surrey. Meanwhile in Henley On Thames I managed my first ever closeups of a Female Banded Demoiselle damselfly, and an Azure mating wheel on Barnhill.

It's been a while, but here's a new dragonfly pic. The female Broad Bodied Chaser original (after cropping) is 3200x2400 so the extra resolution of my new camera is proving quite astounding. Then exactly a month later another Female Broad Bodied Chaser posed for me in the garden in Kenton! Then a Male Common Darter on Barnhill too another month on, and a Female Common Darter at Oversley Wood just after that. Plus a Southern Hawker on 12th August at Horsenden Hill.

First Damselfly pic of 2007 and first Female Broad Bodied Chaser pic, seen up Barnhill on FA Cup day (19th). Male Broad Bodied Chaser on 2nd June. There were Emperors there that day too but never stopped moving long enough for pics. Then on the 6th I found the Female Black Tailed Skimmer basking on a clear mud patch in a meadow. On 18th June a Female Broad Bodied Chaser posed for me on a stem. One of two seen at Barnhill.

A Southern Hawker landed in the garden and rested. It let me get so close that I reckon I could have touched it (not that I would dare disturb it of course). There were also plenty of Common Darters up Barnhill on the 4th.

More Azure and Common Blue damselflies. Note the difference in the tail patterns when identifying them. The Common Blue's tail looks like it has been wrapped in blue tape, while the Azure's tail is more patterned.

It's been a long time! But here are my first damselflies of 2005. No suitable ponds where I work so Barnhill and the surrounding area will be my best bet this year when I get a chance to go there. On the 1st a Large Red was spotted by a pond next to Fryent Way on the side of Barnhill on a warm day. On the 31st the Large Red was in Gunnersbury Triangle Nature Reserve.

Unfortunately the hot dry weather gave way to a prolonged spell of cool showery conditions. I haven't seen anywhere near as many dragonflies since late June. The Emperors slowly disappeared, although I still see the occasional dragonfly zip past on the warmer days.

Photos 11th - 15th June 2004

The recent hot and dry weather seems to have resulted in a boom in Dragonfly numbers. In particular I got my first Broad Bodied Chaser pictures at Barnhill, and on the 15th I found a Female Black Tailed Skimmer that was quite willing to pose for me.

I found a group of Blue-Tailed damselflies near the office. Must admit I wasn't expecting to find them there, but then many of my photos are opportunistic so here are the resultant photos. Also found a curiously small damselfly and some mating Common Blue's.

Photos 24th - 26th May 2004

On the 24th I saw my first damselflies and dragonflies of the year today. Spotted Male and Female Common Blues, Large Reds, Blue-Tailed and possible Azure damselflies. I also spotted the odd Dragonfly flying around, but couldn't be sure of the species. On the 25th and 26th I spotted more damselflies. On 26th I got close enough to a female Black-Tailed Skimmer Dragonfly for a good closeup.

Having expected all the dragonflies to have died off in the cold weather I promptly found Common Darters flying around that lake, and even mating. This was despite it being only 10C outside. (It was sunny and light winds though).

Some great late season shots of dragonflies while the nice weather holds on. There is one particular lake in Stockley Park that currently has lots of Common Darter and Migrant Hawker dragonflies swarming around it.

The prize this time was definitely the Southern Hawker super-closeup. Shame I couldn't get a better picture of that Banded Demoiselle.

I found Damselflies everywhere this week. Since I have never noticed them before (since I bought my camera) I made it a good excuse to get snapping some more.
