It was nice to get back into a glider after a long break. The aerial pics were taken off a 4000' aerotow. The rest were taken on the ground afterwards.

They were everywhere. I was about 1000-1500' above them at the time. Lasham airfield is near the right edge. This cloud near Basingstoke formed a little wave bar on top. Left: When I first spotted it (see tiny bar to left). Right: It grew bigger and bigger as I descended. Same cloud as I descended past it, dipping a wing in to get 0-0.5Kts lift. No lift under it.

Wave clouds were forming early in the day and also later on when these were taken to the (from left to right) South, West and North. Sun shining from behind overdeveloped wave clouds. Looks more like Aboyne than Lasham...

This was one helluva cloudscape as the sun got low. K13 glider P on approach for a hangar landing. ...and finally all good days must come to an end.

A few more pics taken from the ground, before embarking on a late-season local soaring flight of 3 hours.

Took a couple of pictures of Surrey & Hants aircraft. DG300 and Grob here. A fairly quiet launch point. Nice conditions developing. Looking south west. Aerotow combination passing overhead, silhouetted by the bright sky.

Took a Discus B on a cross country flight to Devises, then onto Marlborough before returning to Lasham. (I was planning to continue to Oxford, but a huge shower stopped me after Marlborough.) Then local soared for a further 2 hours, during which I got significantly above some of the lower clouds. The main problems I seem to get with these pictures are occasionally slightly off focus, and reflections in the canopy. To alleviate the former I will really need a camera mount to attach the camera to the glider. To remedy the latter I plan to buy a circular polarising filter. This should also (in theory) cut out other unwanted reflections and some of the haze.

The sky to the West in the direction of Devises just under 30 min's before I launched. Developing nicely. Passed Rivar Hill gliding club on the way to Devises. Viewed from the South. My wing in top right corner. After about a mixed hour of some slow patches and some stonking climbs I arrived at Devises. South, middle and North from left to right. Just north of Devises as I set off on the next leg I spotted this!

These are all pictures that I took after I got back to Lasham and local soared around Basingstoke. Note the huge gap to the north, with showers on the other side. Most of these pics were taken around 4000 feet.

Photos 13th July 2002

Had fun in a K8, and took a couple more piccies when I went South, and again when I returned.

The South Coast as seen from Petersfield at about 5000' above sea level. The large road is the A3 leading to Havant and Portsmouth. Petersfield from the East at 5000' ASL. Cloud's eye view of M3 J8 from West. Popham airfield is on the center right edge of the pic. Height 5500' ASL after climbing up side of cloud.

Photos 4th June 2002

This was the day of my best cross country (170km) to date, and one where I also struggled home from this place:

More gliding pictures. This time there were clouds in the sky, and plenty of them! At one point a thermal took me above the base of a nearby lower cloud. See for yourself the results.

The tail plane looks like a pair of horns sticking out of my hat! Couldn't land without yet another pic of Basingstoke (as seen from the M3). (Don't ask...)

Photos 1st June 2002

I took the camera up in a glider (a Discus B for those who want to know the nitty gritty). Was a hot blue day. Not a cloud in the sky (apart from the occasional brief tiny cumulus). I made it to Greenham Common (near Newbury) and back (only 93Km). Here is a selection of the photos. Just ignore the canopy reflections. :) Curiously the piccies of Aldermaston didn't come out.....

Photos 2nd March 2002

This page shows some gliding pictures that were taken on 2nd March 2002. Incidentally the flight from which I took the aerial photos was also my 200th single seater flight. :)

Launch Point - Note the bus that has replaced the old launch van. This is the glider (Discus-B model) I flew on 2nd March 2002. A bank of trailers to the west of the clubhouse. A large jet just landed. In the foreground is a Grob102. Behind that is one of the aerotow tugs. An aerial view of the airfield from the south west. Gliders soaring below me. (See the second glider in the bottom left corner way below me.)

An aerial view of the launch point from overhead loking south. Behind the launch point is the jet maintenance plant. Picture taken from cloudbase (3000 feet) of the next cloud to the north. An aerial view of the airfield from the south. The main hangar, entrance and clubhouse are visible in the center. Mind the cockpit reflections... Basingstoke from the South. In front of Basingstoke is the M3 (and Junction 6 to the right). Gliders soaring below me. Sun beams lighting up the ground just south west of the airfield. Taken from north of the airfield.

Photos Up To November 1999

Here are a selection of piccies taken on a 35mm camera. On this day I took an aerotow above the clouds.
